Mobile e-Learning

Member of the CIT e-Learning group: research and development of innovative e-learning strategies. Areas include mobile gaming (educational)

Location Aware Programmable Handeld Wireless  Devices
The emergence of low cost GPS (Global Positioning System) devices couple with handheld powerful computing devices (some with a camera) opens up a new area of location aware programmable devices. Application could include remote data interrogation and gathering, theft alarm and recovery,  location based advertising being 'pushed' to a mobile device if it is close to services the user is interested in.

Smart Shopping Assistant
The use of mobile devices (pda's, mobile phones etc) as a shoppingn assistant - everything from creating the shopping list to shop browsing to paperless checkout.

Intelligent Tour Guide

Research and develop an application to allow mobile devices to perform object/symbol recognition. The mobile application to be developed will allow camera enabled mobile devices to gather relevant information on specific items using the built in camera. ** to be updated **

House Resource Management via mobile

Management of resources for a group of individuals sharing a house/flat. Mobile devices interface with house hardware (tv, pc, heating etc). Individuals are allocated resource units e.g. 2 hours TV/day. Members can only use allocted resources so e.g. can only use the resource for the allocated time. ** to be updated **

Other Areas of interest

Location aware devices, automated mobile game testing, mobile as thin client e.g. J2ME/J2EE/SQL, photo recognition, remote monitoring/control, mobile platform home automation, multi networked mobile, automotive

Past Masters Projects I've suprvised:

Object Based Storage System for wireless applications

  •  The emergence of 3rd generation mobile networks will enable the next generation of computing devices with a small scale low power architecture yet with functionality to access the vast resources and data which the internet can provide. The convergence of Internet and Wireless telecommunications domain is creating the need for a new way of accessing and controlling a variety of everyday systems and devices. We need to cater for storage services such as data access, data management and content delivery across a complex heterogeneous network.

Software Life Cycle for Component Software

  • Current software development life cycle models do not cater for the development of component software. A new life cycle is being investigated.
  • Researcher: Oliver Noessler/Karl Grabe
